Walking along the Bow River 5 minutes from Harvie Hights headed West towards Banff from the Town of Canmore, I found a few little treasures. One of the little treasures was this little fly sitting on a Canadian Thistle, also known as creeping thistle, field thistle, cursed thistle, corn thistle, small-flowered thistle, green thistle. Despite its name, the Canada Thistle was introduced from Europe. Canada Thistle has male and female flowers on different plants. Therefore, the flowers are pollinated by wind and insects. One plant can produce more than 650 seeds! Canada Thistle is a noxious weed (A weed arbitrarily defined by law as being especially undesirable, troublesome, and difficult to control) in many areas. Although it might be considered noxious it has its own type of beauty....just don't try to cross a field full of them!!
