Taking a time out of showing clients recent works I am going to share a little about the backyard I use to make my photographs. I am in the Canadian Rockies and this is a very special place to be! The reason why is because every winter we get the privilege of witnessing the collection of 3 of Earth's oceans. This is one of the reasons I think this is the purest place in the world to get married!
The Earth is like a huge fish tank and every bit of time goes by then it is time to do a fresh water change. I know this because my pets are tropical fish and once a week I do about a 40% water change so disease does not start to embrace the biological nature of the environment. It sounds like a lot of work however having a cat or dog is not possible with my work as a full time destination professional photographer.
Almost every day I shoot for at least 30 minutes to find new locations for my next Wedding or Elopement. There are a large number of amazing photographers in the region so the only way to stay alive is to know more scenic locations than anyone. I have been a professional photographer for as long as I have been in the Canadian Rockies which is now 20 years. With the industry now gone digital its like the career is starting all over again.
Somethings about digital are amazing. The biggest of pluses is the thousands of photos I can take over film! The negative is everyone is now taking more photos and every year the files sizes are larger. The bottom line is there will more annual electricity consumed on the planet and currently this means the burning of more coal. Right now 60% of the electricity used in Alberta is from the burning of coal.
I relaunched Adventures in Photography Ltd. in the spring 2007 after I decided not to sell out to a more esteemed company in the later part of 2005. From then till now I have captured about 10,000 gigabytes of images for mainly clients and the files are only getting bigger! To be exact the original Canon 1D Mark I was 4.0 mega pixels and the new Canon 1D Mark IV is 16.1 Mega Pixels. This kind of Quality is what my clients expect when they hire my company because it is the industry standard.
My problem is I love the quality however the Earth really can't afford to flip the bill. Quality means more electricity! More electricity means more coal burning in Alberta! The bottom line is Coal burning equals more Mercury that finds its way into the Eco Systems of the World's Waterways. Modern photography heightens this due to Mercury found in the electronics, and with the millions of digital cameras out there in the land of the Internet Face Booking which is partly driven by the burning of Coal.
Who Pays for Humanity's Social Media?
The waterways of the World pays and the species of these waterways pay with their lives. This information I have provided here is one of several reasons I am sharing my scenic images of the Canadian Rockies to world for a price of a donation purchase to support the Oceanic Preservation Society. The other message with every print sold is a simple one. Changing how we use our technology starts with the consumer and everyone is a consumer.
The Oceanic Preservation Society has proven that a operation of heavy electrical needs can run on Solar Electric Power. In 2010 we have already started pursuing the use of less electricity and we are canceling the use of DVDs and CDs on a regular basis. All of our files will be for download only and clients requiring CDs DVDs will pay by donation that is submitted to OPS. This service will put us in the region as your environmentally correct Digital photographer with this premium service of always having your files online with easy private access 24/7/365!
This is all about better time, energy, and waste management. Most important this is better for all aquatic life from the top of the Ice Fields in the Canadian Rockies all the way down to sea level where the Dolphins like to rip up the waves with the Stoking Hot Suffers!! We can't warn the Fish about the Mercury and I do think about all the animals that have paid with Mercury Poisoning for all the computing hours I spend each year learning how to be a better wedding photographer.
Our print store will be open shortly!
